Home Cinema and Projector Installation

Throw distance, screen size and seating geometry decide the result far more than the projector's spec sheet.

A home cinema is a geometry problem before it is an equipment problem. Get the room relationships right and a mid-range projector looks excellent; get them wrong and no amount of spend rescues it.

Throw distance and screen size

Every projector has a throw ratio — the distance needed per unit of image width. A 1.5:1 ratio means 1.5 feet of distance for each foot of screen width, so a 10-foot-wide image needs the lens 15 feet back. Check this against your actual room before choosing anything.

Short-throw and ultra-short-throw projectors compress that distance dramatically and suit rooms where ceiling mounting far back is not possible, at some cost in image uniformity.

Seating distance

For a 4K image, a comfortable seating distance is roughly 1 to 1.5 times the screen width. Closer than that and you may see structure in the image; further and you lose the immersion the large screen was for. Fix the primary seating position first, then size the screen to it.

The room itself

Two things matter more than equipment. Light control: any uncontrolled light washes out contrast, so blackout treatment is the highest-value improvement in most rooms. Acoustics: bare drywall and hard floors produce slap echo that muddies dialogue. Soft furnishing, rugs and a few absorption panels at first reflection points transform intelligibility for very little money.

Ceiling mounting

Projectors need fixing into joists, not drywall. Allow for cable routing — HDMI and power both need to reach the mount position — and remember filters and lamps need periodic access. Mount so the unit can be reached without dismantling the installation.
